#AFGPoland Develop an App. Develop an experience. 3rd Final in Gdynia

Over the last three years, Gdynia in Poland has been the location of our fourth programme in the Apps for Good network, thanks to the passionate work of the Gdynia Women in Technology. In this blog post, Ewa Jaremczuk shares a summary of the 3rd Apps for Good Final in Gdynia:

On Monday 28th May 2018 the Apps for Good student teams from four schools from Gdynia and the surrounding region competed in the Gdynia Apps for Good final.

Since September 2017 these students had followed their local Apps for Good programme. They had had several meetings with industry experts at Thomson Reuters Gdynia who mentored and challenged them but equally trained them during a presentation skills workshop.

During the year students had been brainstorming in groups of 2-5 young people on ideas for creating a relevant app that would solve some of the issues the school group members came across. The final was now a chance for them to share the results created during long hours of effort and engagement

The final event took place in Pomorski Park Naukowo Technologiczny in Gdynia and was organized by the Gdynia Women in Technology.


Bartosz Bartoszewicz, Deputy Mayor of the City of Gdynia, opened the event and wished all finalists the best.

Iris Lapinski, founder and CEO of Apps for Good, had sent a video dedicated to the participants. She was very proud of the student teams, congratulated them on the progress they had achieved in the program, evolving own ideas into working apps and prototypes using technology and on practising their English language skills.


Next up Team ZOE, the winners of the 2017 Gdynia Apps for Good final and founders of a chatbot that helps kids with physics exam preparation, encouraged all the student teams not to stop and to keep developing their ideas into real-life apps.

Then it was time for each student team to get on stage and present.

It was a hard choice for the judges who included Team ZOE as alumni judges, but in the end, a decision was reached. The winners of the 2018 Apps for Good Final in Gdynia are:

  • 1st prize and audience award: SCAN.IT an app from Liceum Ogólnokształcące Nr 17 w Gdyni. Helen and Oliwia came up with the idea of scanning the components of cosmetics and highlighting the ones which could be harmful together with the descriptions of those components and their impact. They got inspired to create the app not only because of their own needs but also because of existing Facebook groups where members help each other in reading the composition of products. The largest of these groups have 40,000 members.
  • 2nd prize: CureHelper an app from Zespołu Szkół Katolickich w Gdyni. The app contains 3D instructions to exercises which help people at every age with muscle problems, for example with injuries and diseases.
  • 3rd prize: PC & net Helper an app from Zespołu Szkół Ogólnokształcących nr 5, which will help older people to solve different kind of technical issues, e.g. example with mobile phones or TVs.

4th prize for the youngest participants of the Apps for Good program in Poland: Dress App from Zespół Szkolno-Przedszkolny im. Czesława Miłosza in Siemianice. These pre-school students designed an app which will help young people their age to choose appropriate clothes.


All the groups did a great job presenting and a big thank you to the teachers, experts and organizers!

Thanks to Ewa and her fellow volunteers Apps for Good in Gdynia will continue in the 2018/19 school year and we are excited to see what ideas our students will come up next!
